About New Tehri

The district of Tehri Garhwal is one of the largest districts in the hill state of Uttarakhand in India with its administrative headquarters at New Tehri. Tehri Garhwal is surrounded by Rudraprayag District in the east, Dehradun District in the west, Uttarkashi District in the north, and Pauri Garhwal District in the south. Major towns of the district include New Tehri, Narendra Nagar, Chamba, Lamgaon, and Ghansali.

The Tehri Garhwal region was in news in the recent past because of the construction of the Tehri Dam, which is the primary dam of the Tehri Development Project, a major hydroelectric project centered near Tehri Town. The Tehri Dam in Uttaranchal is regarded as the 5th tallest dam in the world, with a height of over 855 feet (261 m).

Tehri Dam is located on the Bhagirathi River, which is the principal tributary of the sacred River Ganges. Tehri Dam has a power generation capacity of 2400 MW, provision of irrigation to an area of 270,000 hectares and irrigation stabilization to an area of 600,000 hectares.

Tehri Dam in Uttaranchal is maintained by Tehri Hydro Development Corporation. The dam is also capable of supplying 270 million gallons of drinking water per day to the industrialized areas of Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

Like other parts of the Himalayan region, Tehri Garhwal has various ethnic groups living side by side. The native Garhwalis generally make their living through different agricultural activities in the hilly land. Most of the native Tehri Garhwal people like Jaunsari, Buksha, Tharu, and Raji are Hindus and Buddhists.

There are many places to see in Tehri Garhwal region like Nagtibba, Devprayag and Khatling Glacier, or the ancient holy temples like Surkanda Devi, Buda Kedar Temple, Sem-Mukhem temple and Chandrabadani temple etc. Tehri Garhwal is another quaint but beautiful little hill district in Uttarakhand.
